Saturday May 10 - Lulaworld 2008 presents SALSAFRICA @ Lula Lounge. One of Lula Lounge’s most successful productions, the highly acclaimed SalsAfrica returns for another groundbreaking evening of collaborative music by some of the finest players from Toronto’s latin, african music and jazz music scenes.

Under the direction of Luisito Orbegoso, Salsafrica is comprised of singers Yeti Ajasin (aka Lady Son), Donne Roberts, Adam Soloman (also both on guitar) with instrumentalists Richard Underhill (sax) David Virelles (piano) Sandy Mamane (bass), Alexis Baro and Alex Brown (trumpet) Yannick Malboeuf and Jamie Stager (trombone) and a sizzling percussion section made up of Mark Kelso, Daniel Stone, Alex Godinez and Luisito himself. Guest DJ for the evening is Billy Bryans spinning Salsa, Soukous and Reggaeton.

The Details: Salsafrica came into being because Lula's co-owner Jose Ortega observed that, although contemporary Latin and African music share many roots, there is not a lot of overlap in Toronto between the players or audiences for these musical forms. Lula hopes to encourage musicians to take advantage of the cultural and musical diversity that Toronto offers by bringing together players creating and performing in different genres. WHAT'S HOT IN QUEER TORONTO, JUNE 2008?
Check weekly events | Clubs this weekend too!

Saturday June 7- Big Primpin’ @ Stones Place. DJ's Hollyrock, Tex and Rory Them Finest. Big Primpin' bills itself as "hiphop for ho's and mo's," and attracts art scenesters, hipster kids, anarchist fags and others unfulfilled by both mainstream and underground approaches to dance music. The girls who come get glammed up because they feel safe, the fags go all out even though it's Parkdale, and the straight boys are well-behaved and generally well-dressed. 10pm. Stones Place, 1255 Queen St. W. $5. 416.536.4242. www.stonesplace.ca l Queer West, Toronto Ontario. ~ D.Q.

Saturday June 21 - Swamperella @ Gladstone Hotel Ballroom The original mandate of Swamperella, ‘to honour the Cajun music tradition’, has never been compromised. The integrity of the traditional form and sentiment has always been maintained even as originals and Zydeco began seeping into the Swamperella repertoire. But there’s nothing stodgy about this band. The old time flavour stirred up in a brand new pot makes for a fabulous and rich musical experience and the Swamp-stew just keeps getting yummier. Swamperella is very happy to announce the release of their new CD, "On the Line". Produced by John Switzer, the album contains a mixture of traditional Cajun waltzes and two steps, Swamperella originals, and some upbeat zydeco numbers. We had a full house, and sold lots of CDs and had a great evening. www.swamperella.com Dance Lesson at 8:30, band goes on at 9:30pm Admission: $10. Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. West at Dufferin.
